Dr. Geneva Misener was a woman whose life work embodied the women’s movement. She was a trendsetting woman who had a remarkable academic record. She was one of Canada’s first female graduates (Queens 1899) and she obtained a PhD, summa cum laude, from the University of Chicago (1903). She was awarded numerous prizes and scholarships, including a Travelling Scholarship from the American Association of University Women in 1903, which allowed her to do postgraduate studies at the University of Berlin and the School of Archaeology in Athens, Greece. In 1913, Dr. Misener became the first female member of the University of Alberta faculty where she taught classics until 1946. She was Advisor to Women Students at the University of Alberta from 1913 to 1920 and was named to the University’s Senate in 1926.
Dr. Misener was one of two delegates representing Edmonton at the 1919 founding of CFUW in Winnipeg and played a significant role in shaping the direction of CFUW Edmonton. She successfully represented the modern woman by combining her professional career while raising her two adopted nieces.
The Geneva Misener Scholarship for a Graduate Woman was established in 2024.
